Quality Control

World trends regarding cement quality are continuously monitored and followed up by the Quality Department in Cementarnica Usje and the R&D and Quality Departments of the TITAN Group in Athens. They are cooperating with many other institutions at national and international level in numerous fields. These institutions include public authorities, universities, material testing institutes and a number of professional associations.

Development and design of new types of cement is also made in cooperation with the Institute for materials testing and development of new technologies “Skopje”-Skopje, Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy at “St. Cyril and Methodius” University, Slovenian National Building & Civil Engineering Institute and The German Cement Work Association (VDZ).

USJE has a modern Quality Control Department: physical, mechanical and chemical analyses for raw materials, clinker and cement testing, as well as fuel testing are carried out with the constant care of modern equipment.

Our Quality control process experts are competent and have continuous training through inter laboratory testing (IMS Belgrade, ATILAH and EUROCERT-Athens) and specialized workshops.

Qualities of cement

Cement’s many qualities - strength, durability and flexibility, among others-make it the world’s most popular building material.

Cement is hydraulic because when mixed with water, it chemically reacts until it hardens. Cement is capable of hardening in dry and humid conditions, and even under water.

Cement is remarkably shapeable: when it comes in contact with water and aggregates, such as sand and gravel, cement is capable of taking on any three dimensional shape.

Cement and the concrete made from it is as durable as rock. Despite climate conditions, cement holds the shape and volume, and its durability increases with the passage of time.

Cement is such an effective adhesive that, once it sets, it is virtually impossible to break its bond of materials such as brick, steel, gravel and rock.
Buildings made with cement products are more waterproof when the proportion of cement is greater than that of aggregate materials.

Cement can provide excellent noise insulation when the thickness of floors, walls and concrete roofs is properly calculated.

Below are listed some of the equipment used in Quality Control Department for testing the quality of our cement products.


1. Mortar Mixer Toni MIX

Preparation of standard prisms with automatic mixing procedure inclusive water feeding in accordance with ISO 679, EN 196-1, DIN 1164, ASTM 305, and other standards.
Convincing safety concept by electrically locked test area, protective shield made of polycarbonate confirming to CE Ergonomic and safety designs.

2. Jolting Apparatus

Used for compacting of mortar specimens 40x40x160mm in triple-gang moulds ToniTechnik Design, technical data and functions comply strictly with EN 196-1 and ISO 679.

3. Computer Controlled Vicat Needle Apparatus ToniSET Compact

Equipped with 6 measuring places for determining the setting time of cement according to EN 196-3; DIN 1164

4. Curing cabinet

Climate Storage Chamber for storage of the specimens in the mould under standardized conditions according to EN 196-1

Toni Trol “Standard”

Microprocessor controlled measuring and control system 4 serial and one parallel interface

- Load frame 10kN; for flexure test according to EN 196-1, ASTM C348

- Load Frame 300kN – 3000 kN for compression test according to EN 196-1, ISO679, ASTM C 109, BS 4550-3

6. LECO SC-144 DR

Leco’s SC 144-DR determines sulfur/carbon in various organic matrices, cement, fertilizers and soils. ASTM approved technique that determines sulfur and carbon simultaneously or individually using direct combustion/infrared detection.

7. ARL 9900 X-Ray spectrometer

Designed to meet the requirements where process monitoring is critical to quality control. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technology provides one of the simplest, most accurate methods for the determination of many types of materials.

Adequate combination of components for the preparation of raw meal, clinker and cement as the overall product management quality are additionally ensured by the use of modern X-Ray spectrometer for quick and exact chemical analyses in all parts of the technological process.

The results of the analysis are available after a couple of minutes, which makes it possible to have a quick and focused influence on the product quality.
